K2 Liquid Fuel HVOF

 HVOF Torches

The GTV K2 kerosene fueled HVOF gun is a rugged industrial tool that produces high quality surface engineered coatings. There are over 100 K2 systems in production in industries ranging from:

  • Aerospace
  • IGT
  • Automotive
  • Shipbuilding
  • Oil and Gas
  • Printing
  • Paper
  • Steel Mill
  • Metal Forming & General Job Shop

K2 Coating Features

  • Flame gas velocity > 2000 m/s
  • Average particle velocity up to 850 m/s
    (WC/Co   88/12, +5 -25 µm)
  • Compressive Residual Stress Coatings
  • Coating thicknesses: 0.001” – 0.4” (20µm – 10 mm)
  • Coating Porosity < 1%
  • Coating Bond Strength > 14,000 psi   (100 MPa)
  • Low heat input to substrate
  • Smooth Surfaces (Ra< 2 µm)
  • Fine WC powder spraying (+ 5 –15 µm), (+ 5 –25 µm),  (+ 3 –10 µm)
  • Low decarburization of cermet powders
  • Low oxidation of MCrAlY coatings

Key Applications

  • High quality Cr3C2/NiCr coatings at 130 g/min @ 50% DE
  • MCrAlY coatings on turbine blades and combustion chambers as LPPS alternative
  • Corrugated rolls using fine powder (+ 5 –20 µm) to Ra < 2 µm
  • Low oxygen content copper and aluminum coatings with low heat input into substrate (Cold Spray alternative)
  • Hydraulic cylinders with WC-Co(-Cr) and Cr3C2/NiCr
  • Doctor blades with WC-Co(-Cr) and Cr3C2/NiCr
  • Drive train components in ship board and automotive applications
  • Chrome replacement coatings for combined wear and corrosion resistance using FeNiCr based alloys
  • Spraying of fine powders (+3-10 µm, +5-15 µm) using standard torch with ”cooler” spray parameters

Key Process Advantages

  • Patented Fuel Injection System for fine kerosene atomization and complete combustion
  • Results in higher chamber pressure for faster and cooler in-flight particles
  • Rugged long lasting wear components
  • Easy to replace expansion nozzle
  • Less sensitive to carrier gas flow than other liquid fuel HVOF torches
  • Spray fine powders without nozzle build-up
  • Long lasting kerosene membrane pump
  • Pure Kerosene/Oxygen flame
  • No ignition gas required
  • No stabilizing or ignition fuel gas required (i.e. H2) resulting in lower operating costs; risk of explosion excluded
  • Wide range of process variables as demonstrated with chamber pressures that can vary between 6 – 16 bars
  • Controller can operate alternative kerosene fueled HVOF torches including JP 5000 and WokaJet
  • TWIN powder feeder to independently feed dual injection ports for precise and controlled powder feeding
  • No flame backfire into powder feed hoses
  • UHVOF configuration for cold spray applications that includes modified combustion chamber with Laval exit.
